A Walk on the Wild Side: Escape the Tourist Scene in Manuel Antonio, Costa Rica

Traveling can be a fun and exhilarating experience.  Taking a Costa Rica vacation at one of our Manuel Antonio rentals will afford you the opportunity to see breathtaking sights, to become immersed in another culture’s way of life, taste new foods and experience new things. There are many seasoned travelers that prefer to stay away from the more tourist dominated sights of a particular destination and head to the more out of the way spots that better reflect and represent the true culture of the place being visited.  Manual Antonio, Costa Rica is no exception, as there are things to do and see, away from the typical hustle and bustle, where the tourists generally tread.

Manuel Antonio is probably one of the most popular travel destinations in Costa Rica.  It is located in the Central Pacific region of the country and is known for its sunshine and beautiful beaches, wildlife and natural setting.  It is a “must see” destination when visiting Costa Rica.

Manuel Antonio is a built up area of Costa Rica with many beaches but they tend to be rather “busy”, more so than some of the more secluded spots further away.  In addition to the more often visited spots such as Manuel Antonio National Park, a frequently visited “green zone” offering sanctuary to varying forms of plants and wildlife, there are quieter places to visit that offer more serene and sedate surroundings away from the often touristy Manuel Antonio.

If a more secluded beach is what you are looking for, then a short 40 minute drive out of Manuel Antonio to Esterillos is in order!  Esterillos is a long, very expansive dark sand beach that can offer hours of tranquil peace and quiet.  It is also known for its rugged waves which make it a great surfing destination.

There are also numerous day trip activities that will take the tourist away from the hustle and bustle of Manuel Antonio.  Damas Island is one such place.  It is an ideal afternoon excursion away from the heavily dominated tourist areas.  Damas Island is known for its diverse fauna and delicate ecosystem.  Its mangrove forests are stunning and are dominated with glimpses of white-faced monkeys and sloths, as well as interaction with the many bird species that populate the area.  A more intimate visit to the mangroves of Damas Island is by canoe, which provides an up close and personal interaction with various components of the region’s tropical rainforest ecosystem.

Horseback riding is another activity that will transport the tourist into a more indigenous Costa Rican environment.  There can be no better way to experience and learn about Costa Rica’s rare wildlife and the more exotic species of plants on the planet than by horseback, just like the traditional Tico cowboys or “caballeros”.  There are numerous areas a short distance away from the tourist dominated places where one can escape to a more sedate time and place on horseback.  You may even come across a secluded waterfall on the way!

These are just a few “walk on the wild side” adventures one can experience while vacationing in one of our Manuel Antonio beach rentals.  In the coming weeks, we’ll provide you with a more in depth look into other wild side adventures you can take during your Costa Rica vacation!
