The Esports Highlights of the Week for February 5

Share.

Watch our favourite highlights from ANZ Esports this week!

Aussie esports has had a fantastic week — especially in Sydney! IEM Sydney is returning bigger and better than before, and Gfinity AU and HOYTS have partnered up to create Esports arenas at cinemas Australia-wide, starting in Sydney! The CSGO action was pretty hot this week thanks to the ESEA’s MDL Season 27. The OPL saw a barnstormer of a match between Avant Garde and Legacy, and Grayhound Gaming’s Pubg team did what they could in the North American Global Loot League.

CSGO – ESEA MDL Season 27

The MDL is a great proving ground for up-and-coming teams to test themselves against the best CSGO players Australia and New Zealand have to offer, but it’s also an exciting arena where those great teams face off against one another. Tainted Minds have been on a tear since dropping to Order in the IEM Katowice Qualifiers, and their game against Grayhound Gaming was a great example of how lasered in they are right now. It was close — in the clip below BURNRUOk even snags a beautiful Ace — but they didn’t tilt and still managed to secure the victory. TM are currently six wins from six games — although it’s obviously early days yet.

League of Legends – OPL Week 3

The top three teams faced off against the bottom three in the OPL this week, and everything went as expected. The big surprise came when Avant faced off against Legacy — the two teams are currently 4th and 5th out of the 8 team competition, and it looked very even between the two of them. The first game went Avant’s way, but Legacy looked extremely strong in game two. A very even battle seemed destined to land in Legacy’s lap, which would tee up the only three game series of the weekend — but when the green machine overextended on a push into their opponent’s base, Avant switched gears, jumped into Legacy’s base and quickly stole the game out from under them. Easily the highlight of the weekend.

PUBG – GLL NA Closed Qualifiers

Grayhound Gaming are a fantastic PUBG team coming out of Australia and they had an opportunity to play alongside some of the best teams from North America in the Global Loot League. They were playing from home, so with a ping disadvantage — although thanks to the way PUBG works that disadvantage can swing both ways at times — but they still did their best. Early on in the competition they were well in contention, sitting in third place. Unfortunately things didn’t go their way, and they slipped to 8th — just out of the running to qualify for the tournament. Their group wasn’t cast, but team captain Zoidm8 streamed his play and it was highly entertaining. At one point TUOK tries to get out of a car and runs into some video game physics, which definitely cut through the tension soaking every moment of a PUBG game quite well.
