Away from the United States, and South Korea, an Australian-based communication firm, Optus, is ready to unveil its new product, smartwatch, that will let their wearers to pay for goods via its Cash By Optus app this year. Not just that, Optus is also working on the smart wristband.

Optus began commercial operations on 31 January 1992 having been awarded Australia’s first competitive carrier licence on 19 November 1991.
Speaking on one of the reasons for the new product, Optus vice president of mobile marketing, Ben White, said “The new product was developed to enable more of its customers to access its cashless payments service, which was launched in November last year.”

According to blog.e-money, the Optus smartwatch syncs with the Cash By Optus app on any bluetooth-enabled smart device. It brings the service to all kinds of smartphone, including iPhones and Windows Phones. It also means people with older mobile handsets that aren’t NFC-enabled can use it.

A payments terminal will recognise a tap of the watch just as it recognises a tap of a debit card via PayWave. It will print a hard- copy receipt, while the watch sends an electronic receipt back to the phone where it is stored in the app.

From its humble beginnings in 1992, Optus has grown to become a company which today supports more than nine million mobile services, one million fixed and broadband customers and thousands of Australian businesses.

The company’s name Optus was derived from the phrase “opt for us”.
“Over the last two decades Optus has not faltered in its commitment to providing customers with reasons to opt for us – by delivering better value, more choice and improved customer service with competitive and innovative products and services,” Divisional Managing Director Vicki Brady, said when Optus celebrated its 20 years  of operationsome years back.
