The Memorial of the Most Holy Name of Jesus

Tags: jesus

Today the Church celebrates the optional memorial of the Most Holy Name of Jesus. Devotion to the Holy Name is deeply rooted in the Sacred Scriptures, especially in the Acts of the Apostles.  Saint Paul tells us in his letter to the Philippians  (Philippians 2: 9) that Jesus’ name is above every other name. It is the name by which we are all saved.  The Holy Name was promoted in a special way by St. Bernard, St. Bernardine of Siena, St. John Capistrano and by the Franciscan Order. It was extended to the whole Church in 1727 during the pontificate of Innocent XIII. The month of January has traditionally been dedicated to the Holy Name of Jesus.

When I was growing up, I remember my father faithfully attending the Holy Name Society meetings, and even though I remember him losing his temper over certain things on occasion, I don’t ever remember hearing him use the name of Jesus in vain. Today we celebrate the Feast of the Holy Name of Jesus. Today’s feast is meant to impress upon us the dignity and the honor of the sacred name of Jesus.

Today, let us lift up the Holy Name in praises by praying the Litany of the Holy Name of Jesus.

Let us pray. O Lord Jesus Christ, Who has said: Ask and ye shall receive; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you: grant, we beseech Thee, to us who ask the grace of Thy most divine love, that we may love Thee with all our hearts, words and works, and never cease to praise Thee. Make us, O Lord, to have a continual fear and love of Thy holy Name; for Thou never ceasest to rule and govern those whom Thou doest solidly establish in Thy love. Who livest and reignest for ever and ever. (Amen.)

Saint Quote

“Jesus, Name full of glory, grace, love and strength! You are the refuge of those who repent, our banner of warfare in this life, the medicine of souls, the comfort of those who morn, the delight of those who believe, the light of those who preach the true faith, the wages of those who toil, the healing of the sick. To You our devotion aspires; by You our prayers are received; we delight in contemplating You. O Name of Jesus, You are the glory of all the saints for eternity. Amen.”

— St. Bernardine of Siena
