Living from the Source
“The woman saith unto Him, Sir, give me this water, that I thirst not, neither come hither to draw. (John 4:15)
I love coffee. Even though one should rather drink water, I prefer the delicious brown liquid with some sugar and a dash of milk. But, it doesn't really quench my thirst, and so I require quite a few cups distributed throughout the day. Again and again, I go to the coffee machine for a refill, with which to quench my thirst.

But, even though one drinks a lot of water, one is never satisfied, the thirst comes again and again, it is a life task to supply the body with liquid.

Today's scripture from the Gospel of John comes from the story of Jesus and the woman from Samaria. She also had to walk to the well, in the heat of the day, to fetch fresh water. And there, Jesus suddenly tells her about a water that never leaves one thirsty. Would it not be practical if one could drink once and never feel thirsty again?

In contrast to the woman at the well, we know today, that Jesus was not speaking of H²O. He was not referring to the fact that we had to continuously supply our bodies with liquid.

Jesus spoke to the woman about another thirst. The thirst after a meaningful and fulfilled life. The woman had already experienced so much during her life. She had, had five men and was already living with another one. The life of this woman doesn't seem to have been very fulfilling, as she was always searching for something new.

No amount of water can quench this thirst for fulfilment. Only Jesus can quench this thirst. Without Him we spend a lifetime searching. What lasts for eternity? What brings us through our limited, earthly life? What remains?

Only those who have received Jesus and His love, who have found the way to the Father through Him, find meaning and purpose in this life. Whoever experiences the grace of forgiveness, whoever experiences the love of the Almighty God within them, has found and need seek no more.

And whomever drinks of this cup, has it eternally, they will never thirst again throughout their entire life, as they have found that which lasts eternally. This source is found today in God's Word, in our Bible. Whoever reads it with an open heart, whoever can accept that which is written there, will never thirst again!

So today I wish you a blessed day, in which your only thirst will still be in the natural, as your spiritual thirst has been quenched. [mehr]
