Growing Old Together

The aging process is not a beautiful thing. At least on the outward. We sag, we bag, we shrink in stature yet we grow in girth. We get weak, we get blind, we get deaf, we get forgetful, and we get….ummmm, not sure what I was going to say there.

But, the aging process shared by two people who have vowed to love in sickness and health, in youth and old age, is a beautiful thing!! A beauty that is profoundly spiritual. A beauty that leaves me breathless. A beauty that is born out of turmoil, pain, and loss. A beauty that is fired in the furnace of life.

Too many times we are tempted to give up while in the refining furnace. We can’t see the end result, so we want to throw in the towel and walk away.

If only we could see the pure gold that emerges—two people sitting on a front porch holding hands. Two connected souls helping each other to find their teeth and their hearing aids. Two ornery people pinching each other in the back side as they shuffle by—one hand on the walker, the other you know where.

I will be this couple! I will laugh with him as we buff his bald spot, he will laugh with me when my breasts and my belly button meet for the first time, and we will laugh together when our trips to the mailbox take all our energy and the greater part of the afternoon. Beautiful!

It is a blessing to share all of your years together.
