October 31 – When He Says, I AM

“But He *said to them, “It is I; do not be afraid.”  John 6:20 (NASB )

Immediately after the miracle of feeding the crowd of 5,000 men plus women and children (the exact number we don’t know.) They followed Jesus to hear him teach and preach and see miracles. They were part of this one. Using a young boy’s lunch of five loaves and two fish, Jesus fed them all with leftovers. They wanted Jesus to immediately be their King. Jesus withdrew by himself to avoid the crush. The disciples waited for Jesus to return as long as they could. Finally got into a boat to cross the sea of Galilee to Capernaum. A storm was brewing, the sea became rough. They see someone coming toward them walking on the surface of the water. So unusual it was frightening to them. Then Jesus said “I AM, don’t be afraid.” That’s God’s name and that is what He says to identify himself. When we wonder if he is coming, he answers with His name “I AM!” If we question if He is hearing us, He declares “I AM!” When tidal waves of life build and break over us and we see nothing but darkness and doubt, we wonder, is God near? He says, “I AM here.”

Brought to you on this day when fear and darkness are celebrated and spirits from below are venerated and given license into our neighborhoods and homes. Remember this day that God calls himself I AM for he has been from forever before and will be forever more. He is mightier than all.
