July 9 – A Sovereign God in Dark Times

“Ah, Lord GOD! It is you who have made the heavens and the earth by your great power and by your outstretched arm! Nothing is too hard for you. - Jeremiah 32:17 (ESV)

When Jeremiah proclaims the sovereignty and omnipotence of God, we find our promise in an historical context. These are the first words of a prayer offered by the prophet Jeremiah in praise to God.  Times were very dark for Jerusalem as it was under siege by King of Babylon Nebuchadnezzar’s army. Judah's King Zedekiah and the people were going to be taken captive to Babylon. Yet God instructs Jeremiah to purchase property near Jerusalem. Even with God’s revelation of coming destruction by Babylon, Jeremiah obeyed. The purchase of this land was transacted according to all the requirements of the Law. Then Jeremiah took the deed – one open and one sealed – had them placed into an earthenware jar so that they would be preserved. God had promised to give the land back to His people and Jeremiah believed God’s promise of restoration. He knew that God was able to keep that promise because God was sovereign and nothing was too hard for Him. We need to have the same assurance and remember this, if God has made a promise, He’ll keep it because He is able and He is faithful. All His promises to us are fulfilled because of His Word.
