“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have Peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.” John 16:33 (NIV)
Each year at Christmas time we are reminded that the angel choir sang for the shepherds at Bethlehem about the peace that Jesus was bringing to people on earth. When Jesus did preform His ministry He taught about His peace. Jesus came to bring peace and he kept that motive in mind down to his last evening with His disciples before his crucifixion. John records what Jesus said that night and our verse has the last recorded words of his teaching that evening. What followed was the prayer Jesus offered for all those, through all time, who would believe and follow Him. He still want us to experience His peace. He told His disciples that they would have peace in Him and that is how there will be peace in our hearts too. In our world we have trouble but in Jesus we find His peace in the middle of the trouble because it is a peace that overcomes all trouble. Let's remember, the peace that Jesus promises us is not like the peace the world talks about. The peace He gives is different and it is complete. We can trust it because it is what comes when we no longer reject but with faith believing we receive it from Jesus forever.
