I recently had the opportunity to sit down with Dan and Lindy Broyles, missionaries in Tanzania, Africa to discus how they came to do that type of work and how the role of the Bible helps them in their daily walk with Christ but also helps them in their work with the local population.
Tell me about yourself and family
Lindy and I are proud parents of three children; Peter who is 6, Lucy 4 and Jack 2 years old. We have been living in Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania for the past two years. The reason why we have come to Africa is because of Jesus Christ and His glory. Our mission as a family is to always put Christ at the center of our lives and obey Him through the grace that He extends to us every day. We want our children to grow up experiencing the power and grace of God for themselves not only through his Word but also through daily life. Even though ministry has its rewards and brings a sense of value to life, it definitely does compare to just simply being with God, spending time together as a family and growing in faith and trust in the Lord Jesus is what our family values most.
How did you come to know Jesus?
I grew up in a Christian family where we went to church most Sundays. After church one Sunday when I was six years old, I accepted Christ Jesus into my heart. It was the truly the best decision I have ever made and my life has had dramatic change over the years of following Christ. It was not always easy, for example having to deal with rejection and self-hatred issues during middle and high school. Learning how to forgive people and let go injustice that has happened in my life and been difficult but rewarding. Through learning about freedom and authority we have in Christ, those strongholds are continuing to be dismantled which results in a greater ability to do what Jesus has called me to do with this life.
Tell me about your decision to move overseas?
In 2003, I had the opportunity to study abroad in Namibia for one month. This class centered around political science and so we were studying the government of Namibia and what type of projects they were involved in to help develop their country. One of the projects was an orphanage specifically designed to house AIDS/HIV infected children. I had never seen anything like this before where there was no hope. These children were going to die because of this disease and yet they were so thankful for everything that they had been given. Whether it be toys or clothes, most of the kids had a smile on their face and joy in hearts and I was an emotional wreck. When I saw the living conditions of these kids and realized that 50% would die before the age of 12, my problems seemed like nothing compared to these precious children. I had an Isaiah 6 moment with the Lord and right then and there I knew what Jesus was calling me to. I wanted to share the love of Christ with these kids, pray for healing, pray for freedom and show them that even though they had no earthly parents, there is a Father in heaven who loves and cherishes them so much that He can’t stop thinking about them. The vision to move to Africa was planted that day and 13 years later, Jesus has brought us here to Tanzania to help orphan children know the love of Christ and provide for their basic needs.
How does using a study Bible help you in your work?
Using a Bible helps in speaking truth to these orphans here in Tanzania. They need to know truth and what Christ says about them to defeat the lies on the enemy that have been planted in the hearts. Seeds of rejection, loneliness, abandonment and self-hatred can be defeated with the Word of God. Speaking the truth and teaching the kids verses where it talks about God being our Father is key to defeating the enemy’s lies and strongholds that he has setup in these kids. Psalm 139 and other Bible passages similar to it are powerful weapons to demolish and uproot these strongholds.
Why do think its important for Christians to use a study Bible?
The reason its important is because study Bibles have really good resources in them for connecting different passages of Scripture together. If you are researching and wanting to know about a certain topic, a Study Bible can give you multiple references to new and old testament scriptures based on the topic. So the person can get a very rich and detailed understanding of what the Bible says in regards to a lot of different concepts.
How can people connect with and support you?
We would love to be connected with people so God’s amazing power can be demonstrated. We want to show what He has done and what He is doing. Partnering financially and prayerfully with the plans of God is a blessing not only to those who receive but to those who give. Currently we are caring for three orphans, which includes housing, food, school, etc. We have a Facebook page Moyo Wakila Mama where you can see what we are up to. Also if people want to partner financially people can go to giving.younglife.org. There you can search by our last name or our area number (Broyles/X465). People could also mail in checks to Young Life at PO Box 2920 Colorado Springs, CO 80901. Make checks payable to Young Life, designated for X465/Broyles.
