A graveyard is often attached or associated with a church. Often you must have an associstion with the church associated with the graveyard. They are often smaller, not as maintained and even has much older markings.

A cemetery is often independent or business ran. They are more modern and newer with larger areas of land.
As for the etymology, the word “cemetery” stems from the Greek “koimeterion,” which means “dormitory” or “resting place.” Early Christians came to use the term to refer to a person’s final resting place (rather than in the literal sleep context).
