Proverbs 10: A Deeper Look

Tags: proverbs

Proverbs 10 lists many things that are good. As I look deeper, I see wisdom, righteousness, diligence, integrity, love, wealth, discipline, prudence and understanding emerge as categories.

I have to remind myself when reading Proverbs that it is easy to agree with the written word. Doing what it says is another story.

If I hold myself up to this example of God’s standard, I will wilt.

Proverbs 10 becomes less of a rulebook for me to follow and more of an encouragement to find each of the categories above possible to obtain only through a relationship with Jesus Christ.

I think my wisest action now is to let scripture speak.

Wisdom

“If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.” – James 1:5

Righteousness

“Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. Through him we have also obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in hope of the glory of God. More than that, we rejoice in our sufferings, knowing that suffering produces endurance, and endurance produces character, and character produces hope, and hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.” – Romans 5:1-5

Diligence

“Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain.” – 1 Corinthians 15:58

Integrity

“For we aim at what is honorable not only in the Lord’s sight but also in the sight of man.” – 2 Corinthians 8:21

Love

“We love because he first loved us.” – 1 John 4:19

Wealth

“And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.” – Philippians 4:19

Discipline

“For the moment all discipline seems painful rather than pleasant, but later it yields the peaceful fruit of righteousness to those who have been trained by it.” – Hebrews 12:11

Prudence

“But test everything; hold fast what is good.” – 1 Thessalonians 5:21

Understanding

“Think over what I say, for the Lord will give you understanding in everything.” – 2 Timothy 2:7
