Back in 2013 Arkansas State Senator Jason Rapert, above, successfully sponsored a bill which made it an offence for people to drive while suffering from sleep deprivation. It called for drivers to be charged with negligent homicide if they caused a fatal accident after not sleeping for the previous 24 hours.
According to Hermant Mehta, when Rapert makes an appearance on the Friendly Atheist site:
It’s never for anything good. He has threatened to shoot constituents who ask him questions, fought for a Ten Commandments monument on Capitol grounds, and blamed ‘godless secular humanists’ for Target’s trans-inclusive bathroom policies.
Well, Rapert made another appearance on the site this week after he posted an 18-minute video on Facebook in which he railed against gay marriage, transgender folk using toilets and abortion. He was driving home from Illinois in his King Ranch Ford Truck, “running on American energy”, returning, he says, from a preaching gig at the New City Community Church.
The woman who alerted Mehta to the video says that she watched the entire thing and did the math:
He looked at the camera 254 times. In 18:26 minutes, that means he looked every 4.354 seconds … some of those times it was for a couple seconds at a time.
I guess we should be grateful he didn’t kill anyone while staring at the camera …?
He quickly deleted the video, perhaps grasping the irony that a politician who fought against dangerous drivers is doing something equally dangerous. But not before someone captured the video and re-uploaded it onto YouTube.
