Today’s Skim of the News for Smart Jews
- U.S. secretly paid $400 million ransom for U.S. servicemen taken captive in Persian Gulf in ILLEGAL transaction. The money was procured from banks in Switzerland and the Netherlands and were flown in an unmarked cargo plane to Iran. Since a transaction with Iran in US dollars is illegal under US law, the U.S. used Dutch and Swiss banks and then transferred the equivalent of the sum to their central banks. If you did it, it would be called money laundering. If the U.S. State Department does it, it’s diplomacy…even when explicitly illegal per U.S. law. Think anyone will be arrested for it?
- Israel criticized at UN for committing violations against Palestinian children day after viral video of Palestinian father urging Israeli soldiers to shoot his 4 year old son. UN Security Council holds meeting focusing on Children in Armed Conflict and holds up Israel as the example problem. Israel responded, “Hamas’ annual military camps for children where “instead of learning how to swim or play soccer, the children of Gaza are taught how to assemble automatic weapons and operate shoulder-fired missiles. Instead of nourishing their youth with the dreams of a bright future, Palestinian children are fed a steady diet of hatred for Israel and glorification of violence in the lessons they learn in school, in the sermons they hear in the mosque, and in the streets that are named after terrorists.”
- Attempted Jewish child kidnapping on Shabbos in Far Rockaway. A 41 year old Bayswater woman has been arrested by police for attempting to kidnap a four year old Orthodox Jewish girl enjoying a Shabbos morning trip to the playground. This is the 2nd attempted child kidnapping in the neighborhood, and this attacker was not the same as the other attempt. The community remains on alert.
- 60 year old New Mother delivers her first child in Israel. This woman is the oldest to give birth in Rechovot, Israel. But the oldest ever to give birth in Israel was a 65-year-old Hasidic woman from Bnei Brak. Both are the results of advanced fertility treatments allowing women who have never been able to have children to finally be successful, baruch Hashem.
