Buying Matzah

Buying Matzah

Every year it's the same thing. I buy too much matzah! It's really great matzah... my favorite food in the world. Not only does it remind me of when we ate the manna in the wilderness after leaving Egypt, but it tastes wonderful too. Handmade, round, and thinner than the regular matzah. I love it.

But every year I buy too much. This year I made up my mind that I was not going to spend any extra money. 220 shekels for a kilo means that 4 kilo of matzah costs the same as a warm, long winter overcoat. Something you buy maybe once in your life. So I decided to buy only 3 Kilos.

     "That's it!"

But then my inclination said to me; "How about 3 and ½ kilos?"

"Hey that's a good idea. No! I'm not going to do it. Every year I end up giving away a kilo or more of matzah. This year I am going to be "normal".

So I decided again, 3 kilos would be plenty.

I walked over to the factory on the edge of Mea Sharim as I have for some 30 years. The place is always noisy…some 30 young religious guys rolling and banging dough into matzah. But this time it was especially noisy. I finally found the guy in charge of sales and yelled, "I want 3 kilos thin."

He bent over to hear better and I yelled again, "3 kilos thin."

He looked me in the eye and said, "You want ½ kilo?"

Guess Who told him to say that!

"Yes, give me 3 ½ kilos thin."

I bought 3½ kilos of these wonderful, delicious matzah. Now all I have to do is to find the guests who are going to help me eat them.

Have a kosher and happy Pesach.
