We all know what it feels like to be thirsty. Nothing quenches our Thirst like water. And no matter how much water and other fluids we drink, in a matter of hours we will thirst again. All of us will repeat this cycle for a lifetime.
During His public ministry, Jesus talked about another kind of water—not for the body but for our spirit. “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to Me and drink,” He said (John 7:37, NASB). All of us have a need for this spiritual water. It is to our spirit what natural water is to our body. Without this spiritual water, our spirit becomes dry and “dehydrated.” Moreover, only Jesus can quench our spiritual thirst.
The Gift of the Holy Spirit
As to what this spiritual water refers to, we don’t have to guess what Jesus is talking about. John writes, “But this He spoke of the Spirit, whom those who believed in Him were to receive; for the Spirit was not yet given” (verse 39). It is through the gift of the Holy Spirit that Jesus quenches our spiritual thirst.
Jesus extends the invitation to receive this living water to all who are thirsty. (“if anyone is thirsty…”). That would be those who feel a spiritual void on the inside and who thirst for relief. Actually, that’s the status of all who do not have a personal relationship with Christ. They have tried and are trying lots of other things for relief but all prove to be of little to no avail.
One day, Jesus stopped at a well to drink water. There, He met a Samaritan woman. He told her that if she knew who He was she would ask Him for a drink, and He would give her living water (John 4:10.) Then Jesus gives this marked distinction between natural water and the living water He gives:
“Everyone who drinks of this water will thirst again; but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him shall never thirst…” (verse 14). Hence, not only will this living water quench our spiritual thirst, but also we will never feel spiritually dry and void on the inside again.
This living water was poured out upon all flesh on the day of Pentecost through the gift of the Holy Spirit. It is available to all who thirst after Christ. Those who drink thereof will never thirst again.
