Do you expect the Holy Spirit to speak to you and through you? Or do you think that such an experience is merely a far-fetched idea? The Holy Spirit is a real person. He was sent to guide us in this life. How can He possibly do that if we don’t expect and allow Him to speak to us?
Jesus warned His disciples that they would suffer persecution for His name. “But when they deliver you up, take no thought how or what you shall speak: for it shall be given you in that same hour what you shall speak,” He told them (Matthew 10:19). “For it is not you that speak, but the Spirit of your Father which speaks in you” (verse 20).
Like the twelve disciples, we must allow the Holy Spirit to speak to us and through us. One of the vital keys to our success in this area resides in what Jesus said to the twelve. They should not rehearse what to say but allow the Holy Spirit to give them what to say.
I know we can take that point too far. Most of the time, we should think before we speak. I have heard the preacher who claims he does not prepare his sermons beforehand. He just opens his mouth and lets God speak through Him. I believe such thinking is over the top. But there are times when we need to place a demand on the Holy Spirit to speak to us or through us. Jesus was speaking specifically to the times when the disciples found themselves being persecuted.
Perhaps this entire subject seems strange to some of you. You feel comfortable only when you rehearse everything beforehand and you stick to the script. That is our natural mindset. But in serving the Lord we must get outside of our human comfort zone. We must allow the Holy Spirit to speak to us and through us. He wants to impart timely words of wisdom from above. This is the dynamic lifestyle God wants for each of us.
The more you live your life expecting and allowing the Holy Spirit to speak to you and through you, the better you will get at living that way. But you will never arrive if you don’t take the first step. Pray for the Holy Spirit to speak to you and through you at appropriate times. Pray for ears to hear what the Holy Spirit is saying. And remember that He will always speak consistently with the Word of God.
