I met this boy for the first time seven years ago, when we came to live in Giasnogor. He was a kid not taller than my waist. He lives next door with his parents and siblings. He fell sick and got to be operated on for a hernia, and then we helped the family as much as we could. Today he has come to see me, and he has reminded me of that episode. He has also shown me that he has his eyes wide open and has named other children and other families that we have helped in one way or another. “If it weren't for you, So-and-so would have died; and So-and-so would not have come out of her illness”. Conocí a este muchacho hace siete años, cuando vinimos a vivir a Giasnogor. Era un crío que me llegaba a la cintura. Vive en la casa de al lado con sus padres y hermanos. Se puso malito y hubo que operarle de hernia, y ayudamos a la familia en lo que pudimos. Hoy ha venido a verme, y me ha recordado aquel episodio. También me ha demostrado que tiene los ojos bien abiertos y me ha nombrado otros niños y otras familias a las que hemos ayudado de una u otra manera. “Si no fuera por vosotros, Fulanito se habría muerto; y Menganito no hubiera salido de su enfermedad”. Y ha ido nombrando casos de vecinos. Salman, que así se llama, ha sido hoy uno de esos Caramelos que Dios nos ofrece de vez en cuando. Ojalá que no caiga en la tentación del engreimiento, ni me deje llevar por la vanidad. Lo que hacemos, lo hacemos gracias a quienes a su vez nos ayudan a nosotros, y a la gracia de Dios. Siervos inútiles somos. Pero de todas maneras, los caramelos saben muy ricos…
