Bible sermon:  What is sacrificial giving?

Mark 12 vs.  41-44

41 Jesus sat down opposite the place where the offerings were put and watched the crowd putting their money into the temple treasury. Many rich people threw in large amounts.

42 But a poor widow came and put in two very small copper coins, worth only a fraction of a penny.

43 Calling his disciples to him, Jesus said, “I tell you the truth, this poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the others.

44 They all gave out of their wealth; but she, out of her poverty, put in everything — all she had to live on.”

What is sacrificial offering?

  1. Sacrificial offering is NOT giving any sum of money into the offering basket- Mark 12 vs. 41- Jesus sat down opposite the place where the offerings were put and watched the crowd putting their money into the temple treasury.
  1. Sacrificial offering is NOT putting large amount of money into the offering basket- Mark 12 vs. 41- Jesus sat down opposite the place where the offerings were put and watched the crowd putting their money into the temple treasury. Many rich people threw in large amounts.
  1. Sacrificial offering is putting ALL your income including the income for your daily needs into the offering basket- Mark 12 vs. 44- They all gave out of their wealth; but she, out of her poverty, put in everything — all she had to live on.”
  1. If someone has 100 dollars in his account and gives an offering of $10, $20 or $30 dollars he has not given sacrificially.
  1. If someone has $1000 in his account and gives an offering of $100, $200 or even $900 dollars to God, He has not given sacrificially.
  1. If someone has $100 in his account and gives ALL the $100 into the offering basket, the person has given an sacrificial offering.

Why should  we give a sacrificial offering?

  1. To challenge God concerning a prayer request.
  2. To fulfil a vow.
  3. For thanksgiving
  4. When what you have at hand is not enough, to provoke divine provision.
  5. To pay a first fruit
  6. To make a covenant with God
  7. To give a normal offering.

Prayer

I shall not be stingy towards God in Jesus name.
