Every now and then we will have Negative Thoughts running through our minds. It is normal and okay to feel fearful and worried about life. But it becomes an issue when you entertain the negative thoughts too much, allowing them to take root and grow inside of you. The negative thoughts become depressive when you feel overwhelmed and hopelessness begin to set in.
We need to recognise that there are various sources of our stress and worries. They can be external or internal, within our control and out of our control. It is always important to start with the internal, which is to deal with our own thoughts and emotions. What is within your ability to make changes, you do it to the best that you know how and let God do the rest.
The world believes in positive self-talk and motivational speeches. People flock to buy books and hear from the best motivational speakers to get inspired and energized to pursue success.
But as believers we do not need to run after motivational speakers. Our best motivation comes from the Word of God. The impact of meditating and confessing God's words is far more powerful than we know. Jos 1:8 is a promise from God that when we meditate and act on His word, we will be prosperous and have good success.
Now how do you handle a depressive thought? The most direct way is to replace those thoughts with another one and the most powerful way is to replace it with meditating on God's promises for us in His Word. There is a promise of God in the bible for every worry and concern that we have. Phil 4:8 reminds us that we need to meditate on whatever things that are true, noble, pure, lovely and of good report.
There was a very dark and depressive season in my life where I felt a deep sense of hopelessness and I allowed myself to entertain suicidal thoughts as I could no longer bear the pain and suffering that I was going through. Then the Lord reminded me of someone's testimony on how meditating on Psalms 23 helped him walked through dark times, as verse 4 says "Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; For You are with me; Your rod and Your staff, they comfort me."
I began to memorise Psalms 23 and kept meditating them through day and night so that there was not a moment that I allowed other negative thoughts time and space to invade my mind. By meditating on Psalms 23 for two weeks, the heaviness in my heart, the deep sense of darkness and hopelessness suddenly disappeared. My heart and my mind felt so much lighter. Jesus has lifted up all my heaviness and depressive feelings through the power of His Word. His word has the power to bring life and life more abundantly. His word has the power to resurrect any dead situation or dream in our life.
Today, you have the power to overcome depressing thoughts. Instead of allowing your mind to be preoccupied by fears and worries, pray and meditate on God's word to renew your mind and to strengthen your faith. Stand on His word and promises, for all of God's promises are Yes and Amen (2 Cor 1:20). And let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful. (Heb 10:23)
Dear God, I am going through a difficult season in my life and am feeling worried and anxious. I also struggle with negative and Depressive Thoughts and I am fearful of what lies ahead for me. Jesus, You said that those who are weary and burden can come to You and You will give us rest. I come before You today. Take away all my depressive thoughts, worries and fears. Help me to meditate and confess Your word daily that I may live a victorious life. I thank You for all the promises that You have given to me in Your word, and I believe that my future is great and secure in You. Amen!
