jodo shu vs nichiren, deciding which?

I'm kind of "stuck" between these two and wonder if anyone else has been there and how they decided? I think the main thing for me would be Honen didn't say other methods were entirely useless, they could be practiced in addition to the Nembutsu. This seems to accord more with me with the 84,000 expedient means. Whereas as far as I can tell Nichiren seems to teach only the Daimoku is efficacious at this point.

I've been reading about Honen though and apparently one of his followers (after he died), Songwan, commited harakari (cut himself open and removed some of his entrails, but not enough apparently to kill him for some days) out of hatred for this world and desire to be born into the Pureland… and apparently that's supposed to be some kind of admirable act due to its inclusion in this book (I can't find anything about Songwan anywhere else). Which is quite disturbing, committing suicide attempting to go to the pureland doubtlessly will only lead you to naraka.
