Back when I made this account in February, I'd been going back and forth on checking out the local Buddhist center for a few weeks. Well, it took a further seven months, but I did finally attend a meditation group there yesterday!
I'd just like to thank everybody Posting on this subreddit for providing an easily accessible and active resource, the daily browsing of which helped me not to bail out on the vague draw towards Buddhism I've felt since around the spring of 2017. (I would've gladly welcomed a chance to look into Buddhism well before that, but that is when I started to feel like actively seeking out those chances myself.)
From my time lurking here, I know that there's a lot of debate about whether the discussion going on in here has any value, whether one should trust the randos here piping up with their unvetted advice, or whether this subreddit is actually detrimental to Buddhism as a whole. (Oh yes, and a lot of arguing about people posting pictures of their shrines.)
I'm not even remotely qualified to answer those questions, but I can say that without the people here asking questions, debating different topics, as well as posting news, articles, pictures, videos, book recommendations, music, and so on, I can guarantee I would've not had the confidence to walk up to that place yesterday, or to keep up practicing meditation since February. So while one should maybe take the stuff posted here with a healthy dose of sodium, this place does at least sometimes point people towards actual, real life practice. (It also helps that the tone here, for the most part, is pretty friendly- hell, one of you guys even sent me a giant-ass book from halfway across the world!)
So again, thanks, everyone!
