Unease over South China Sea

Although China has built islands and installed military facilities in the South China Sea, six other countries are also claiming sovereignty over the same area.

However, China's foreign minister, Wang Yi now says that Beijing made “positive progress” in developing a code of conduct with its neighbours over the South China Sea.

Nevertheless, Mr Wang is accusing the United States of fuelling regional tensions by sending an aircraft carrier to Vietnam.

The USS Carl Vinson is the first American military vessel to dock in Vietnam since the war ended 43 years ago
Hear Mr Wang:
“Of course the South China Sea is faced with challenges, and the biggest challenge comes from some external forces unwilling to see the calm waves in the South China Sea but bent on provoking troubles. They easily and quickly dispatch fully armed ships and airplanes to flaunt their military clout and thus become the biggest factor in disrupting the peace and stability in the South China Sea.”
