Are you a Wise person? It takes a lot to be wise, both school and street smarts combined. Street smarts meaning practical things you need to know to live, and school smarts being whatever career path you choose to follow, including your very basic understanding of reading, writing, and math. Knowing a good portion of each of these can help us become wiser people, or at least, knowledgable people. In order to be wise, you need to practice using these smart skills in your life. God calls us to be both knowledgable and wise people, disciples who learn from Scripture, prayer and Jesus' teachings, while also wise by putting what we learn into practice for our everyday lives, and teaching the Good News to the world. Are you good at being a wise person?
Today's Gospel states: 'Coming to his own country he taught them in their synagogue, so that they were astonished, and said, "Where did this man get this Wisdom and these mighty works? Is not this the carpenter's son? Is not his mother called Mary? And are not his brothers James and Joseph and Simon and Judas? And are not all his sisters with us? Where then did this man get all this?" And they took offense at him. But Jesus said to them, "A prophet is not without honor except in his own country and in his own house." And he did not do many mighty works there, because of their unbelief' (Matthew 13:54-58).
Today's reading talks about Jesus' teachings of wisdom. Many of course he people in Jesus' time didn't believe a word of his teachings, even casting him out of their towns because of their unbelief. They couldn't grasp the wisdom he was sharing with them, let alone put it into practice. It was only after his resurrection that many began to really get what he'd been saying, going forward with this wisdom and bringing it to the world as disciples. In order to be wise, we first need to learn, taking time to listen at mass, reading scripture, in prayer and to those closest to us. Only as we become more knowledgable and learn about God's will, can we be wise enough to share this news with the world. Take some time in prayer and ask God to help you develop your learning for faith in order to wisely share His Good News with the world.
Today we pray:
Thank You for helping me to know more about Your will for my life in each passing day. Guide me to continue to learn more, so that I may share Your wisdom with the world.
I pray in Your most holy name, Amen.
