Do you ever find yourself daydreaming about stories you've read, imagining the events that they occur, making your own perspective? I'm sure that when you go off into your daydream land, you draw the story out based on things, places, people you've already experienced, seen with your own eyes. It may be unique to you, but very similar to things you already know. Can you create a picture in your head of something you've never seen, never experienced, never felt for yourself? Probably not right? You can only have Faith and make your best estimated guess on what it is, what it looks like, based on things you have already experienced. How then is it possible to have faith if you have never seen the foundation which it is built on? That is the true challenge of faith.
Today's First Reading states: 'If then you have been raised with Christ, seek the things that are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things that are above, not on things that are on earth. For you have died, and your life is hid with Christ in God. When Christ who is our life appears, then you also will appear with him in glory. Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: fornication, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry. On account of these the wrath of God is coming. In these you once walked, when you lived in them. But now put them all away: anger, wrath, malice, slander, and foul talk from your mouth. Do not lie to one another, seeing that you have put off the old nature with its practices and have put on the new nature, which is being renewed in knowledge after the image of its creator. Here there cannot be Greek and Jew, circumcised and uncircumcised, barbarian, Scyth'ian, slave, free man, but Christ is all, and in all' (Colossians 3:1-11).
This reading gives us the basis of what it means to be people of faith. We must have an 'absurd' faith, something that is not influenced by those around us, or predicted based on scientific predictions. It must be a faith that is beyond this world, a special belief, beyond what the mere human mind can experience or see. We can conjure guesses on what it means to believe, but in the end it will be your own. Take some time to reflect on where your faith life is leading you. Ask God to help you believe even when others challenge you for proof, to have trust and faith in every area of your life.
Today's prayer comes from 'Prayer for Special help' a prayer for believing:
I come to you as a Humble Child, You know what I seek before I say, You what I need before I could even ask, I ask you Dear Father to be with me in these hard times. When all my hope, faith and strength are fading Father lift me up. Make me see your light Make me believe in you again dear god. Make me strong, give me your power to survive the Great storm, you are the only father we trust. Father I love you, I worship you and I praise you I know all is well in Jesus name Amen
