What does it mean to be wise? There is a difference between being smart in this world and being wise in one's faith life. One can become a scientist with PHD and study the big bang theory, but without having God in their life and calling upon God's grace in their life, this life will not feel fulfilling or bring them the joy they could find if they stepped forward in faith. We as humans were made to seek God, and everything we do should help us on this path. The song 'Step by Step' comes to mind here, with the lyrics "God You are my God and I will ever praise you", as in every thing, big and small that we do, we should ensure God is helping us get there. It continues on, "I will seek You in the morning, and I will learn to walk in Your ways. And step by step You'll lead me, and I will follow You all of my days". Do we let God lead us and bring us wisdom?
Today's First Reading states:'Therefore I prayed, and understanding was given me; I called upon God, and the Spirit of wisdom came to me. I preferred her to scepters and thrones, and I accounted wealth as nothing in comparison with her. Neither did I liken to her any priceless gem, because all gold is but a little sand in her sight, and silver will be accounted as clay before her. I loved her more than health and beauty, and I chose to have her rather than light, because her radiance never ceases. All good things came to me along with her, and in her hands uncounted wealth. I rejoiced in them all, because wisdom leads them; but I did not know that she was their mother. I learned without guile and I impart without grudging; I do not hide her wealth, for it is an unfailing treasure for men; those who get it obtain friendship with God, commended for the gifts that come from instruction' (Wisdom 7:7-14).
In this passage we hear about wisdom as it should be in our lives. If used properly, wisdom will help fill us with God's Holy Spirit in our lives, and is even more priceless than gold or anything we think has meaning. With wisdom given by God, we will see what is precious, value true beauty and not become proud or greedy in our life with any processions, but give everything to the good of God. If we let God help us and seek His graces, we will become wise as to what is truly important in life and learn how to love and be loved. What can be more valuable than following in the footsteps of God?
Today's prayer comes from 'belief net' a prayer for wisdom:
Almighty God, the fountain of all wisdom, you know our necessities before we ask and our ignorance in asking: Have compassion on our weakness, and mercifully give us those things which for our unworthiness we dare not, and for our blindness we cannot ask; through the worthiness of your Son Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.
