A wise life is blessed

“Never say no out of fear.”
“Don’t burn a bridge you might want to walk across later.”
“Raising kids is the hardest thing you will ever do in life, but it is also the most rewarding.”
“Turn the other cheek.”
“Where’s there’s a will there’s a way.”

These pithy little sayings are easy to remember because they concisely express an important truth. We love our mottos, maxims and mantras. The more we see them and think about them the greater the chances are that they will have a shaping effect on the way we live, which is what we want. When we find ourselves in a relevant situation they’ll probably be what we think of. We are shaped by the ideas we deeply believe and also by the ones that just tend to stick.

That’s one of the ways Proverbs show its worth. Full of memorable sayings they are designed to have a shaping effect. They are wisdom on tap so that whatever the situation we find ourselves facing there is wisdom on hand to help us. No long Bible study necessary, no desperate searching through a concordance needed.

The greatest value of the Book of Proverbs though is two-sided. Firstly, it clearly exposes the dangers of foolishness and the harm that can be done. Secondly, it shows us the preciousness of wisdom. A Wise life is to be greatly esteemed, to be sought after, to be desired because wisdom has so many benefits – it blesses our whole life. In the goodness of God, many of the benefits of wisdom are available to all regardless of belief yet the surest, safest, deepest richest treasures from the house of wisdom are rooted in knowing God.

Near the end of the book, Agur asks,

“Who has gone up to heaven and come down?
Whose hands have gathered up the wind?
Who has wrapped up the waters in a cloak?
Who has established all the ends of the earth?
What is his name, and what is the name of his son?
Surely you know!” – Proverbs 30:4

The amazing thing is that God revealed the name of His Son to everyone. One who went up & came down, one who gathers the wind, wraps the waters and establishes the ends of the earth.

What is the name of His Son? Jesus.
