Lions Week 2 inactives: Kalif Raymond, Julian Okwara WILL PLAY vs. Packers

The Lions won’t be quite as shorthanded at wide receiver as possible.

The Detroit Lions have declared their inactives for their Week 2 matchup versus the Green Bay Packers on “Monday Night Football”.

The Lions elected not to elevate any practice squad players this week, thus leaving their roster at 53 players. Additionally, because the Lions have eight offensive linemen active for today’s game, they are eligible to expand their game day roster from 46 to 48 players.

Therefore, with 53 players on the roster and 48 eligible to play, the Lions only need to declare five inactive for today’s matchup.

Here are those five players:

Lions inactives:

  • WR Tyrell Williams (concussion) — ruled out due to injury
  • DL Kevin Strong (concussion) — ruled out due to injury
  • RB Jermar Jefferson
  • EDGE Austin Bryant
  • CB Corey Balentine

Williams was ruled out on Saturday and the Lions’ coaches are planning on increasing the playing time for receivers Trinity Benson—who took Williams place last week after he left the game—and Quintez Cephus.

“I think it was a learning experience for him,” coach Dan Campbell said of Benson getting playing time in Week 1, “but it kind of got him acclimated to our offense and he’s been – I feel like he’s a step ahead of where he was a week ago. You can see it in practice, details, just mentally him getting these plays and the terminology. So, I feel pretty good about him going into this one.”

Strong, who saw 44 percent of defensive snaps in Week 1, will be replaced by Rookie Levi Onwuzurike (who missed Week 1 with a hip injury) who is healthy, active, and back in the lineup tonight.

Jefferson is inactive for the second week in a row as the Lions opt to keep their primary two starting running backs and Godwin Igwebuike active as a kick returner.

After an EDGE competition left Julian Okwara a healthy scratch last week, Bryant appears to be on the wrong end of things this week.

Ballentine, who was claimed just this past Thursday, likely isn’t up to speed just yet and needs more time with the playbook.

Packers inactives:

  • S Vernon Scott (hamstring) — ruled out due to injury
  • TE Joseph Deguara (concussion)
  • OL Jake Hanson
  • DL Jack Heflin
  • CB Shemar Jean-Charles
  • LB La’DArius Hamilton

Starters left guard Lucas Patrick (concussion) and safety Darnell Savage (shoulder) are both active tonight and are in key spots for the Packers. Patrick is likely to draw time against Nick Williams and rookie Levi Onwuzurike, while Savage could match up with T.J. Hockenson.
