We prefer the term “frugal” over “cheap.”

The first (notable) player Signing of the Brad Holmes era comes by way of Tyrell Williams. It makes sense in many ways from his ties to Anthony Lynn (playing for Lynn’s Chargers in 2017 and 2018) to the Lions receiving corps being the thinnest unit on the team. His price tag is reasonable (one year, $4.7 million base salary) and that is a trend we can expect to continue this offseason. A rebuilding team without a lot of money to spend means bargains will abound.

Side note: the fact that the New Orleans Saints seem to operate $50 million over the cap each year makes me think the salary cap does not exist, but the Lions are low on cash and probably won’t get that leniency.

Yes, there will be cap casualties and maybe even some restructuring that may allow a splash signing or two, but the norm this offseason will probably be signings of the Tyrell Williams variety.

We can make connections to who the Lions might target, but let’s give you all the power (with our cap restraints) instead of connecting the dots. That brings us to our Question of the Day:

Welcome home, Johnathan Hankins.

We are a few years removed from the Detroit native being considered one of the game’s best run stoppers, but the veteran defensive tackle remained above average to good as a consistent starter in Oakland.

He’s started all but two games the last three years with a run defense grade at a respectable 70 (Pro Football Focus). Hankins will likely command a salary south of $4 million per year and he’s only 29 so he should have a few quality years left in him.

With the futures of Danny Shelton and Nick Williams here in Detroit being uncertain, Hankins can come in and give similar or better production without breaking the bank. A run-stopping tandem of Hankins and John Penisini (stop laughing) can help Detroit have a cost effective unit and let them spend a little more to bolster other areas of need on defense. I’m going with Hankins but there are plenty of other options to consider, so what bargain option would you like the Lions to bring in?
