D’Andre Swift sidelined with illness, but clears concussion protocol

Swift has clearly been suffering some serious symptoms after a Concussion has now held him out for two games and possibly more.

Detroit Lions rookie running back D’Andre Swift was trending towards returning to play this week after missing the past two games with a concussion, and while it looked like his recovery took a step back on Thursday when he was missing from Practice, his absence was actually due to an illness that was not COVID-19 related. A Lions official confirmed that Swift has actually cleared concussion protocol, suggesting there’s a good chance he plays this week.

Obviously, brain injuries should always be taken seriously, and fellow teammate Adrian Peterson noted his concern for Swift, seeing significant change in Swift’s demeanor over the past couple weeks.

“You think of a guy like Swift, he’s very competitive. Obviously a great person and athlete,” Peterson said. “To see him not being himself. That energy level, when you see him not being the same because of what he’s dealing with, it hurts.”

However, it appears Swift is on the mend and if he can work through this illness in the next 48 hours or so, he could board the plane to Chicago and take part in his first game in three weeks.

Additionally, it appears the Lions will have Danny Amendola back this week. The Lions wide receiver was upgraded to “full practice” on Thursday, the first time he’s reached that status since suffering a hip injury against the Washington Football Team. He hasn’t played since.

Unfortunately, the news isn’t as good for cornerback Jeff Okudah or wide receiver Kenny Golladay, who remain sidelined with their respective injuries.

Here’s a look at the entire injury report for Thursday:

CB Jeff Okudah (shoulder) - No practice
WR Kenny Golladay (hip) - No practice
WR Quintez Cephus (not injury related) - No practice
DL Da’Shawn Hand (groin) - No practice
RB D’Andre Swift (illness) - No practice (downgrade*)
LB Christian Jones (knee) - Limited (upgrade)
DE Austin Bryant (thigh) - Limited
QB Matthew Stafford (thumb) - Limited
CB Mike Ford (concussion) - Full practice
WR Danny Amendola (hip) - Full practice (upgrade)
TE Hunter Bryant (concussion) - Full practice
