2 Detroit alumni will announce Lions draft pick

2 recent Lions alumni will be announcing picks for Detroit this weekend.

The NFL likes to add some flash and flare to the draft by announcing the picks in a variety of ways. 2018 will be no different, as the Buccaneers will announce one of their Day 3 picks with a parrot, Chewbacca will announce a 49ers pick, and the gold-medaling U.S. Men’s curling team will make the announce a pick for the Vikings.

While the Detroit Lions aren’t bringing the weird with their announcers, they will have a few familiar faces to approach the podium. It was announced this week that former Lions receiver Nate Burleson and former linebacker Stephen Tulloch will report Detroit’s third-round pick this weekend.

Those two choices should come as no surprise. Though the Lions have had their issues with former players (see: DeAndre Levy, Calvin Johnson), Burleson and Tulloch have been two of the most loyal alumni in recent Lions history.

Burleson, now a popular analyst for both NFL Network and CBS, began a popular clothing line he dubbed “Lion Blood.” He is one of the few national analysts that talks up the Lions and seems to look beyond the stigma of the past. However, he is still very open and honest about his time in Detroit. Just a few weeks ago he admitted that a former Lions cornerback told him when he signed with the Lions that Detroit was a place where careers go to end.

Tulloch has been similarly loyal to Detroit, despite only playing just over four seasons with the team. Upon retirement, Tulloch requested to announce the decision to end his football career in Detroit, despite being drafted by the Titans and finishing his career with the Eagles.

His loyalty to Detroit was even tested when there was a somewhat messy divorce in 2016. Though it was leaked the Lions would be releasing Tulloch back in February, the team didn’t end up doing so until July (for reasons that are still unclear), potentially making it tricky for him to find a new home. Still, Tulloch clearly understood the business side of things and remembers his time in Detroit fondly. It will be good to see him and Burleson again on draft weekend.
