Report: Eagles signing former Lions linebacker Paul Worrilow

The Eagles are signing another former Lion defender.

It looks like another 2017 Detroit Lions player will be taking his talents elsewhere. Just minutes after NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport announced that center Travis Swanson is expected to sign with the Jets, his NFL Network colleague Mike Garafolo reported that former Lions linebacker Paul Worrilow is signing with the Eagles:

Last year, Worrilow signed just a one-year deal with the Lions to help mitigate some of the damage from cutting DeAndre Levy and Detroit’s overall poor depth at linebacker. Worrilow stepped in on a few occasions to play middle linebacker when first-round draft pick Jarrad Davis was out with injury, and he got a significant amount of playing time as the team’s strongside linebacker for most of the season.

While the Lions needed his veteran composure last year, Worrilow’s overall play was pretty much as expected: below average. He tallied just 30 tackles in 13 games (eight starts) and earned a PFF grade of just 60.1.

Though Worrilow was also a big contributor on special teams, it was clear he was not going to be part of the Lions’ plans under new head coach Matt Patricia. Patricia went out and immediately signed two new linebackers in free agency, Devon Kennard and Christian Jones, and later signed the veteran they needed that had both experience under Patricia and can play special teams: Jonathan Freeny.

That made Worrilow ultimately expendable, but now he joins the NFL reigning champion Philadelphia Eagles. This is now the second former Lions player the Eagles will be adding. Earlier this offseason, Philly signed defensive tackle Haloti Ngata, even though the Lions offered him an identical deal.
