Thursday open thread: What was your favorite thing Matt Patricia said in his introductory press conference?

Did Matt Patricia inspire you with any of his words?

We joked on Wednesday that Introductory Press conferences tend to be glorified pep rallies. The new coach comes in, promises that he’ll bring the team to relevancy and get them to a championship as soon as possible. Then we all go home and feel a lot better about ourselves.

While there was certainly some of that on Wednesday, it was actually surprisingly devoid of empty promises. Patricia didn’t guarantee to bring a Super Bowl to Detroit or even set a specific goal for the 2018 Lions team. He was clearly just there to introduce himself and answer whatever questions were thrown his way.

That’s not to say his press conference wasn’t inspiring at times. In fact, it absolutely was. So today’s Question of the Day is:

What was your favorite thing from Matt Patricia’s press conference?

My answer: First, I was very impressed with how he dealt with the media. Granted, this was a softball introductory press conference, but he wasn’t confrontational at all. A particularly neat moment was when DetroitLions.com writer Mike O’Hara said, self-deprecatingly, “Even I don’t care who I am.” To which Patricia replied, “I do.”

But in terms of the actual content of his words, I think my favorite thing he said was in his opening statement after he got all of the thank yous out of the way. I’ll just let his words do the talking.

“I believe that I am a leader. I believe that I am a problem solver. I want to represent the toughness of this city. We will be organized. We will be detailed. We will teach and develop our players and our coaches. We will be passionate. We will love and respect the game, and we will be committed to winning. We will be competitive in all that we do. We will have a smart, tough, fundamentally sound football team that will play, perform and can execute under pressure. We will be hardworking. We will be competitive in all aspects of our planning, preparation and our performance. We will have a high-character culture in our organization. Our players will be positive role models and contributing members of the community. We will have a blue-collar mentality. We will work hard as a team to make this city proud.”

Some of that stuff may sound like cliche coachspeak, but it still gets me pumped for the season.

Your turn.
