What do you think of the new hires?
On Monday afternoon, news finally broke regarding some of coaches Matt Patricia will reportedly bring along with him to Detroit. According to Alex Marvez of the Sporting News, Patricia will hire Jeff Davidson as the offensive line Coach, George Godsey as the quarterbacks coach, and Brian Stewart as defensive backs coach.
While none of those names are exactly Earth-shattering and each one of them has already worked directly with Patricia before, all three coaches have been in the business for at least a decade and know how the business works.
So today’s Question of the Day is:
Which of the three reported hires—Davidson, Godsey and Stewart—are you most excited about?
My answer: It has to be Jeff Davidson, the new offensive line coach. To me, this was one of the most critical hires Patricia would have to make this offseason. The Lions offense has been on the cusp of being great thanks to the play of Matthew Stafford, but the lack of protection and a consistent running game has held the team back drastically.
It is typically on the offensive line coach to develop and teach a running game scheme, and Davidson has a resume filled of instances doing exactly that. Since becoming a coach in 1995, he has held a position working with the offensive line for 15 total seasons.
His success has been somewhat inconsistent during that time and it’s a bit concerning he only lasted a single season at his last two jobs, but you’d be hard-pressed to find a coach with more experience and expertise than Davidson, and that’s exactly what the Lions need at the position.
