Final 2017 NFL power rankings: Detroit Lions end in the middle of the pack

The Lions finished right smack dab in the middle.

Normally we drop our weekly power Rankings roundup on Tuesday—aka Power Rankings Day—but considering the avalanche of coaching news over the past 48 hours, power rankings fell through the cracks. I’m sure you were all devastated.

But with a brief moment to breathe, let’s get to the final version of the 2017 NFL power rankings for the season. The Detroit Lions finished the season with a decisive win over the Green Bay Packers. But with Green Bay seriously beat up and nothing really on the line, no one was really convinced of anything following the Lions victory.

Detroit barely moved at all following Jim Caldwell’s final win with the team.

SB Nation (“hope rankings”): 15th (up 3)
ESPN: 18th (down 4)
Bleacher Report (Simms): 16th (up 1)
USA Today: 17th (no change)
CBS: 17th (no change) 15th (up 1)

Of course, it wouldn’t be a power rankings roundup without something completely irrational from ESPN. A week after the “Worldwide Leader” moved the Lions UP two spots following a devastating loss to the Bengals, ESPN somewhat arbitrarily dropped the Lions four spots to 18th after their season finale win.

While their methods seem completely random, their overall rankings fall in line with everyone else’s. Detroit is a consensus middle-of-the-pack team, and it’s hard to argue against that considering their 9-7 finish.

That being said, there are going to be a lot of expectations following this team in 2018. Bob Quinn made it clear that a 9-7 finish is no longer acceptable for this franchise and whoever he hires as the next head coach will be expected to surpass those expectations immediately.
