Report: Lions will interview Texans defensive coordinator Mike Vrabel on Wednesday

The Lions now have three interviews lined up this week.

The Detroit Lions continue to work quickly through their head coaching candidates this week. The Lions now have a third reported interview scheduled for this week. According to Albert Breer, Texans Coordinator Mike Vrabel will interview for the job on Wednesday:

Vrabel will be the second candidate interviewed the by the Lions. Here is the interview schedule per multiple reports:

Today (Tuesday): Lions DC Teryl Austin
Wednesday: Texans DC Mike Vrabel
Thursday: Vikings OC Pat Shurmur

The Lions have also reportedly sent requests to interview Patriots DC Matt Patricia, Panthers DC Steve Wilks, and Packers assistant head coach/linebackers coach Winston Moss. The Lions won’t be able to interview Wilks while he prepares for Sunday’s playoff game against the Saints. However, they could fit in interviews with Moss or Patricia this week.

Despite the fact that the Patriots are still alive, the Lions are permitted to interview Patricia because New England has a bye. However, after the bye week, they would have to wait until after the Patriots are eliminated from the postseason—which could be some time.

As for Vrabel, there’s a lot to like about him as a candidate for the Detroit Lions. With a linebacker background, he could help develop Detroit’s young talent there, and while he’s still young to the coaching game, he has garnered the respect of his peers quickly and jumped the ladder at Houston quite quickly.

The Indianapolis Colts have also been given permission to interview Vrabel to fill the position left by fired Chuck Pagano.
