Detroit Lions claim defensive tackle Rodney Coe off waivers, cut Kasim Edebali

The Lions have added yet another Defensive lineman to the roster.

Detroit Lions general manager Bob Quinn has had a busy season acquiring and swapping defensive line talent. After injuries to Kerry Hyder and Jordan Hill in the preseason, the Lions have been rotating player after player through their roster. Things got even worse the Detroit loss Haloti Ngata to a season-ending injury.

That trend continued on Wednesday, as the Lions claimed former Seattle Seahawks defensive Tackle Rodney Coe off of waivers.

Coe made his first ever appearance in an NFL game last week against the Jacksonville Jaguars. He only appeared in two defensive snaps for Seattle and did not register any statistics. Prior to that game, the Seahawks had Coe on their practice squad.

Coe is in his second year in the NFL after spending his college days at both Iowa State and Akron. In his senior year at Akron, the 305-pound lineman tallied 47 tackles. 9.0 tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks. Coe went undrafted in 2016 and has since spent time on the practice squads of the Cowboys and Buccaneers, before landing with Seattle in 2017.

To make room for Coe, the Lions waived defensive end Kasim Edebali. Edebali had been part of the Lions’ rotation on the edge for the past four games. He did not tally a single tackle during that time. The recent addition of Dwight Freeney likely made him more expendable.

Coe will have to make a quick turnaround if he is going to play in Saturday’s game against the Chicago Bears. If Coe does manage to play, he will be the 17th different defensive lineman to play a defensive snap for the Lions this year. In 2016, the Lions only played 12 different defensive linemen.
