NFL waiver wire: Lions claim G Zac Kerin, T Brian Mihalik

Injuries and failed development have left the Detroit Lions thin on the offensive line. Therefore it comes as little surprise that the Lions added two linemen via the waiver wire on Sunday. As first reported by Jeff Risdon, Detroit claimed former Vikings guard Zac Kerin off waivers. According to Justin Rogers of the Detroit News, the team also added offensive tackle Brian Mihalik, who was waived by the Steelers this weekend.

Kerin went undrafted in 2014 out of Toledo and spent the past three seasons on the Vikings roster or Practice Squad. Although he doesn’t have a career start to his name, he has made 13 game appearances for Minnesota. He has versatility as a center and was a two-time, first-team All-MAC player in college.

Mihalik is actually making his return to the Lions. Last year, the Lions signed Mihalik to the 53-man roster in early October, before cutting him shortly thereafter and adding him to their practice squad. He lasted less than two weeks there before the Steelers poached him to their roster.

The former seventh-round pick has yet to play in a regular season game, but clearly has some interest around him. He has good size at 6-foot-9, 302 pounds, and at age 25, he could potentially still have some room for development.

The Lions will have to cut two players to make room for the two roster claims. We’ll be sure to update this story once those players are announced.
