Several Lions players learned of their performance bonuses via Twitter

Tahir Whitehead learned he was $48,000 richer on Twitter today.

Details of the Detroit Lions’ performance bonuses from 2016 went public today. If you don’t know what performance bonuses are, they’re exactly what they sound like. Worked into many NFL contracts are incentivized bonuses that can be earned through hitting statistical benchmarks, earning post-season honors (Pro Bowl, All-Pro, etc.) or oftentimes just seeing the field enough.

MLive has the full list all of the Lions’ bonuses from 2016. Of note, Kerry Hyder led the group with an additional $264,082.74 paycheck coming his way, while Nevin Lawson, Graham Glasgow, Travis Swanson and Devin Taylor rounded out the top five.

Apparently, this news hit Twitter before some of the players were notified themselves. Their reactions were pretty great.

Tahir Whitehead (bonus amount: $48,401.47) seemed the most surprised by hearing the news via Twitter:

Justin Rogers of The Detroit News, who wouldn’t reveal his sources, gave him the bonus details and Whitehead seemed pleased with the numbers:

But when Whitehead saw the amount that Quandre Diggs was getting ($154,175.69), he asked his teammate for a little help:

Diggs suggested he hit up Hyder for the scratch. Hyder himself seemed pretty pleased with his payday:

Enjoy your offseason check, Kerry. You’ve earned it.
