NFL free agency: Key additions, losses for each NFC North team

Recapping the free Agency moves for each team in the Nfc North.

The Detroit Lions have stolen quite a few headlines after a very active first week of free agency. Headlined by their signings of Rick Wagner and T.J. Lang, NFL analysts have mostly praised the Lions’ ability to upgrade their offensive line despite losing two starters. The Lions Wire even declared (with tongue firmly in cheek) the Lions NFC North Offseason champions.

But how has the rest of the North dealt with free agency this year. We took a look at all of their moves through Tuesday night to see just how well the Lions stack up against their rivals.

Minnesota Vikings

Added:

  • T Riley Reiff
  • T Mike Remmers
  • DE Datone Jones

Lost:

  • T Matt Kalil (Panthers)
  • T Andre Smith (Bengals)
  • WR Charles Johnson (Panthers)
  • WR Cordarrelle Patterson (Raiders)
  • TE Rhett Ellison (Giants)
  • LB Audie Cole (Jaguars)
  • CB Captain Munnerlyn (Panthers)

Overall:

The Vikings made upgrading their tackles their No. 1 priority, and for good reason. Minnesota’s offensive line was a injury-filled, sack-ceding disaster in 2016. The additions of Reiff and Remmers may not have been the Vikings’ number one selection—and they may have overpaid for each—but the two are undeniably upgrades from their 2016 starters.

Elsewhere, the Vikings lost a few offensive weapons, most notably Patterson. The fate of Adrian Peterson has yet to be determined, but there is a non-zero chance the veteran running back returns to Minnesota.

Green Bay Packers

Added:

  • TE Martellus Bennett
  • TE Lance Kendricks
  • CB Davon House

Lost:

  • C JC Tretter (Browns)
  • G T.J. Lang (Lions)
  • LB Julius Peppers (Panthers)
  • LB Datone Jones (Vikings)
  • RB Eddie Lacy (Seahawks)
  • SS Micah Hyde (Bills)

Re-signed:

  • G Don Barclay
  • LB Nick Perry
  • LB Jayrone Elliott
  • P Jacob Schum

Overall:

In typical Ted Thompson fashion, the Packers have bee notoriously stingy in re-signing their own. They’ve already lost six players who were heavy contributors in last year’s NFC North champion team. Most notable may be their loss of key defensive pieces Julius Peppers, Datone Jones and Micah Hyde. Green Bay’s defense was already poor last year—especially in the secondary—now they’ll have to do some serious work to help Aaron Rodgers on the other side of the ball. Bringing Davon House back to Green Bay is a good start but not nearly enough.

Green Bay did, however, make one of the bigger splashes in terms of offensive weapons. Inking Martellus Bennett to a three-year, $21 million contract upgraded free agent Jared Cook—who has yet to sign elsewhere—in a huge way.

Overall, however, this was another quiet free agency for the Packers, who continue to insist on letting other teams overspend.

Chicago Bears

Added:

  • QB Mike Glennon
  • WR Markus Wheaton
  • WR Kendall Wright
  • TE Dion Sims
  • T Tom Compton
  • CB Prince Amukamara
  • SS Quintin Demps

Lost:

  • QB Jay Cutler (released)
  • QB Matt Barkley (49ers)
  • QB Brian Hoyer (49ers)
  • WR Alshon Jeffery (Eagles)
  • TE Logan Paulsen (49ers)

Re-signed:

  • LB Christian Jones
  • DB Johnthan Banks
  • K Connor Barth

Overall:

The Bears are really the only team that came close to the Lions’ furious activity in Week 1 of free agency. They unloaded their entire quarterback depth chart, and replaced Cutler with Glennon at the price of $45 million over three years. The Bears are hoping that the former third-round pick is a bunch of untapped potential ready to be unloaded. Still, many are poking fun at Chicago for paying a heavy price for what many believe is a downgrade from the inconsistent Cutler.

Chicago also did its best to mitigate the damage left by Alshon Jeffery’s departure. The acquisition of Kendall Wright was an under-the-radar signing for just one year and $4 million. Dion Sims, too, will bring another weapon to a Bears offense that was severely lacking them in 2016.
