Although that Om represents the most profound concepts of Hindu belief, it is very present in everyday life. Many people around the world begin their day or any work or even a trip by saying “AUM.”
Aum is not a word, but rather an intonation, which, like music, beyond the barriers of age, race, culture and even species. It is believed that it is the sound basis of the world and contains all other sounds. It is a Mantra or a prayer in itself and every Mantra (Hindu) begins with the word ‘AUM.’ If repeated with the correct intonation, it can resonate throughout the Body and the sound it produces can penetrate the center of his being, the soul. According to Srimad Bhagavad Gita, “there is harmony, peace, and happiness in this simple, but the sound that is so profoundly philosophical.” By vibrating the sacred syllable AUM/Om and focusing on the Supreme Personality of Godhead, one can even leave his body, and certainly, achieve the highest state of eternity is “stateless”.
'AUM' - The Absolute Symbol
We all know that the word AUM consists three alphabets – A, U and M. The alphabet ‘A’ stands for the casual body (the sound). The alphabet ‘U’ stands for an astral body (the vibration). The alphabet ‘M’ stands for physical body (light). We all have seen AUM/OM symbol; a symbol that is made of three curves, one semicircle, and one dot. Do you know the significance of the formation of this sign? Let me tell you.
Largest Curve At The Bottom
The curve at the bottom, which is the longest one represents that waking state. Try to have a look at the mentioned curve now and you will see this curve is larger in size and turned outward. This represent the largest, major and most common state of our consciousness.
Smallest Curve At The Top
This curve represents the state of unconsciousness or deep sleep; a state where we as a sleeper wants nothing, but sleep. No dreams and nothing, just a perfect sleep.
An Inward Curve On The Right
This inward curve represents the state of dream. If you see closely, this curve in exactly in the middle of Largest curve at the bottom and smallest curve on the top. This denotes that when we dream, we are somewhere in between the state of full consciousness and deep sleep.
The dot on the top of semicircle represents the state of bliss; a quiet, peaceful state. According to holy sculptures, this state is the only goal we are here for and this state is the destination point of all spiritual activities.
Last, but not the least, this dot on the top of these curve and above semicircle represent Maya, the worldly distractions. According to symbol between three curves (state of the body) and one dot (the state of bliss), the only hurdle is one semicircle. In simpler terms, to reach the highest state of bliss, we need to conquer Maya. If you see closely, the semicircle is below that dot is open and is not touching the dot. The significance behind this is – once you reach the higher state of bliss, even Maya cannot touch you.
The Power of AUM
Om provides a dual perspective. On the one hand, it projects the mind beyond the immediate to the abstract and inexpressible. On the other hand, it makes it more tangible and understandable absolute. It encompasses all potentialities and possibilities; it’s all that was, is, or can still be. It is the same all-powerful time while still remaining undefined.
In meditation, when we chant Om, we create in us a vibration that fits in sympathy with the cosmic vibration and we start thinking universally. The momentary silence between each chant becomes palpable. Then, you should take care of the opposition movement between sound and silence until finally, the sound stops. In the resulting silence, the mere thought of -om-is stifled; there are more thoughts. This is the trance state where mind and intellect are exceeded, where the ego mixes with the Infinite in the pious moment of realization. This is a time when all small temporal affairs are lost in the desire of the universal. Such is the immeasurable power, unlimited, infinite of “Om.”
This mantra is a syllable divinely filled power. If the agitation of your mind prevents you from entering your deepest meditation, use a mantra; repeat ‘AUM’ for a while. The most powerful of all mantras is AUM; a single indivisible sound. It is the vibration of the Supreme, the seed sound that is at the origin of the universe. AUM in every moment and AUM knows neither birth nor death. Be it in the past, the present and the future – everything is revolving around AUM.
It is better to sing AUM aloud so that the sound can vibrate even in your ears and fill your entire body. This will convince your mind and make you feel a deeper sense of joy and accomplishment. When you sing aloud AUM, the sound “M” must be at least three times longer than its “AUM”. If you sing loud, you feel the omnipotence of the Supreme. If you sing softly, you feel the bliss of the Supreme. And if you sing in silence, you will experience the peace of the Supreme.
The mantra AUM is the most powerful mantra. It is the primordial sound that connects you with your true self. It is considered the manifested sound of the Divine and has a powerful effect on the human mind (Mandukya Upanishad). By chanting AUM, the vibration of sounds will harmonize every cell in our body. AUM healing are thousands of years old, from a time when people were more attuned to the higher wisdom and living in harmony with the Universe.
Close your eyes and experience the power of AUM.
