Travel and food go hand in hand.
Aside from my constant search for good food, travel also allows me to take photos of such breathtaking sites. Whether that means waking up 3AM in the morning to catch the sunrise at the beach, staying up all night for a star trail, or climbing slippery rocks just to get a better angle of a huge wave, I’m game all for the sake of photography.
Travel, for me, is my refresh button. Whenever I feel bogged down and uninspired, I’ve learned that travel has that healing power to re-energize my weary soul.
Through the course of my travels, I’ve slowly learned to pack some Travel Essentials. My gear is a compilation of things I picked up along the way mostly from travel mistakes! After several heart thumping boat rides and river crossings, threatening the security of my camera gear, I finally decided to purchase a dry bag that can fit my entire camera bag.
The notebook and pen reflect my slightly OC and foodie side. Prior to a trip, I usually list down all the restaurants or karinderia that I want to go to. They’re all listed on my handy dandy notebook!
The malong is just the perfect cover up while dressing up and for warmth. I’ve already suffered too many cold nights on a bus or camping along the beach.
The headlamp became a part of my travel gear after my friends and I were caught still trekking from Pongas Falls in Sagada after sunset. It was such a scary experience since we were walking almost blind along a cliff!
And of course, I can never leave the house without my camera. There are times I’ve traded my SLR for a point and shoot camera for “camera threatening” trips like caving or spelunking; but still, I need to have some form of camera with me at all times. It’s an extension of myself. I know that sounds exaggerated, but I really mean it.
Not only does my camera allow me to capture moments and bring home memories, I’ve learned that it is a highly effective way to gain the trust of locals, especially of children. Oh how they love being photographed and seeing their wacky poses on the camera’s LCD! I tell you, it works like a charm.
Furthermore, whenever I make a return trip, nothing compares to the reactions I get whenever they see their photos printed for them. <3
So here you go, those are my 5 travel essentials. How about you?
