Feeling Like Belle in the Charming and Picturesque town of Colmar, France

Last year, I spotted an article claiming that Colmar was recently voted as one of the prettiest villages in France.  After doing some quick Google searches, I realised why- this lovely little village looked like a movie set   A few weeks later, we booked our tickets to Basel, Switzerland for a long weekend away.

Remember the opening scene of Beauty and the Beast, when Belle is visiting the Charming Town centre with vivid colours?  Colmar, and the entire region of Alsace, is like walking through the movie sets – it is too perfect for words.  From the bright colour buildings, cobblestone alleys and the wood timber houses –  charming doesn’t even begin to describe how picturesque Colmar was.  We visited in March (and unseasonably cold) but in later months, the flower boxes would have been packed with bright and welcoming blooms throughout the city.

The town centre of Colmar has quite a bit of vehicle restrictions, meaning it is perfect for pedestrians to stroll down the alleyways, get lost and discover the charms of the city.

As you stroll along (taking a million and one photos) be sure to visit La Petite Venice, which is at the heart of Colmar town centre.  There is a small canal system that runs through the town, and in La Petite Venice it’s a perfect chance to see the charming canal system.

One of my favourite things to do when visiting a new place is to ask your hotel (or your AirBnB host) for the best local bakery.  And Colmar, we were not disappointed – when our host pointed out the charming bakery with French delights freshly baked in store- enough to make any diet go out the window.  (Besides, calories don’t count when you are walking over 20,000 steps per day, right?)

Speaking of amazing food, Colmar had an amazing blend of French and German cultures – meaning a hybrid of food on offer – pretzels and macarons on the same street.

We didn’t have any expectations of Colmar, and I’m glad we didn’t – it allowed us to simply enjoy the city at our own pace and the surrounding areas. (Don’t worry, I have another post coming about our itinerary in greater Alsace – ideal if you are thinking of visiting with a rental car.)

Have you been to Colmar? What did you think? Were you humming Beauty and the Beast songs like me, during your whole visit?

(PS- Curious where we stayed in Colmar? Here’s the link to our AirBnB!)
