Eating out in Singapore can be very affordable if you go to a food centre. The setting of a food centre may be very basic but that does not mean the food there is necessarily average or ordinary. We have been visiting the Old Airport Road Food Centre for lunch recently. There is a whole array of good affordable food to be found there. In this post we shall highlight a few stalls with good noodles at Old Airport Road Food Centre.
Roast Paradise Hakka Char Siew Noodles ($3.50)
Roast paradise is popular because of their Kuala Lumpur style caramelized char siew. Their Hakka minced pork noodles are good too. The noodles were drizzled with a mix of oils but did not feel greasy. The char siew was well marinated, moist and very tasty. It was a simple but enjoyable bowl of noodles.

Hua Kee Hougang Famous Wanton Mee
Hua Kee Hougang Famous Wanton Mee ($4).
What makes Hua Kee Hougang Famous Wanton Mee special are their noodles and chilli sauce. Their noodles are apparently factory made according to their secret recipe. The noodles had a nice springy texture. The char siew was tender and the wantons had thin smooth skins and were delicious. The chilli really gave the dish a nice kick.

Lao Fu Zi Fried Kway Teow
Lao Fu Zi Fried Kway Teow ($4)
The char kway teow had a sufficient level of wok hei and was moist, but not too wet. There was a good balance of flavours. There was quite a bit of vegetables, which added some crunchy texture to the dish and made it appear to be a healthier version. Overall, quite a good fried kway teow.

新美香卤面 Xin Mei Xiang Lor Mee
Xin Mei Xiang Lor Mee ($4)
The gravy, made from starch and eggs plus some secret mix of spices, was smooth and luscious. Hand-shredded deep-fried Batang fish or Spanish mackerel was one of the key ingredients of Xin Mei Xiang Lor Mee. The textures and the mix of savoury, sweet and tangy flavours produced a bowl of delicious lor mee. Read our post on 新美香卤面 Xin Mei Xiang Lor Mee.
