espressolab is a nice cafe in the CBD with good coffee. Located in China Square Central, it also serves pastries, cakes, breakfast and lunch and the prices are reasonable. Currently they have a weekday lunch special at $12.80, which we thought was a good value deal.

A new hotel under the “Capri by Fraser” brand is being built at China Square Central at where the fountain courtyard used to be. So the place may looked a little messy and hard to access. However, the dining and retail outlets in the podium continue to operate and espressolab is on level 2 of China Square Central.

espressolab has many outlets in Malaysia but, it seems, only one in Singapore. espressolab at China Square Central is nicely decorated, with the use of lots of light wood. It is rather spacious for a cafe in Singapore CBD, where rents can be exorbitantly high. The tables are well spaced out and the place has a relaxed atmosphere.

The food menu is fairly straightforward with the usual cafe items like sandwiches, pasta, wraps and all day breakfast items. Photos of sections of the menu are below.

We went to espressolab for lunch and ordered a Slow Cooker Pulled Pork Sandwich ($9.80) and one of their $12.80 daily sets, the Grilled Chicken with Mashed Potatoes. A long black was $4.20 and cappucino was $5.20. No GST or service charge would be added to the bill. Orders are made at the cashier’s counter but the food and beverages would be served to the table.

The drinks were served quite promptly and the food items were served after only a short wait.  The Pulled Pork Sandwich looked plain and overall the taste of the sandwich was fairly ordinary.

The chicken was the better dish. A good sized piece of chicken sat on a bed of mashed potatoes and was drizzled with a tasty gravy. The chicken was tender. The dish as a whole was satisfying and enjoyable.

The coffee was very good. It was smooth and creamy and had a chocolatey flavour. It was good enough to order another round of coffee.

espressolab is conveniently located and has a fairly spacious comfortable dining area. It has a relaxed atmostphere and reasonably priced menu. The lunch special at $12.80 is a value for money deal. The coffee is very good. espressolab is good place of a simple lunch and an ideal hangout space in the CBD.
