The new Spanish restaurant Pim Pam by FOC opened at Claymore Connect, the shopping arcade adjoining the Orchard Hotel. It is situated at street level, facing the junction of Orchard Road with Orange Grove Road. Having experienced success in Singapore at their first outlet at Hong Kong Street, FOC restaurant (see our review here), had added an outlet at Sentosa. They now bring their tapas and other Spanish culinary creations to Orchard Road in the form of Pim Pam FOC. We had lunch there recently.
Pim Pam FOC takes up a large space. It is big and bright unlike the dim and cozy feel of the FOC shophouse on Hong Kong Street. One thing they both have in common is the presence of large heads as part of the decorations.
FOC Orchard has a spacious bar and coffee area. The main dining area is on a raised level, where the seating density greatly increases.
Pim Pam FOC is a full day dining restaurant. Breakfast is served on weekends. The breakfast menu contains some breakfast items plus the Bocatas section of the main menu which kicks in after 12 noon. We were there just before noon and so had access to both the breakfast as well as the main menu. We ordered items from both.
From the breakfast menu, our first item was the Pim Pam Trinxat ($12) – mashed potatoes, fried eggs, pork belly and some other condiments. A classic breakfast kind of dish. No fancy ingredients here but somehow the taste was very good.
From the Bocatas section of both menus, we tried the French Kiss ($18) and Nandu ($16). Essentially, the French Kiss looks like a focaccia sandwich with a small salad on the side. The secret ingredient is the foie gras terrine sandwiched inside. Small bits of marinated shiitake and apple added interest to the mix. Hard core foie gras fans might be disappointed, but for the rest of us, we liked the mild liver taste. The filling tasted great. The bread could have been better toasted. It has a chewy rather than crisp surface.
The Nandu was a more unusual dish – Iberico ham served on French omelette. This would be attractive item to have with drinks.
From the main menu, we ordered Mushroom and Crab Croquetas ($2.50 / piece), Pork Chop and Scallop Paella ($22) and Doodle Churros with Chocolate ($4).
Both types of croquettes were good. The eyeball-shaped ones are the crab (I think).
The most interesting dish of the day was the paella. It was served in a large shallow flat pan. It looked like a big serving but the overall volume was very low. The pan was only about a centimetre deep. One person could easily eat up the whole thing as it was very delicious. The scallops were fresh and small pieces of pork (with bones) were tasty.
Finally, something sweet to finish the meal – churros with a chocolate dip. A sweet end to our lunch, or some may call it brunch, at Pim Pam FOC. Service here was not as friendly and spontaneous than the main FOC restaurant. But it is nice to see a new restaurant like Pim Pam livening up this end of Orchard Road.
