Britons will not be able to live in Spain if the UK exits the EU...

There is a thin but perhaps scary report in The Olive Press about what might happen to us émigré Brits following a 'Brexit'. It begins: 'British people will not be able to live in Spain if the UK exits the EU, a minister has claimed...'.
I think that there is plenty at risk for us ex-pats if the UK leaves Europe, although I rather doubt a complete freeze between the UK and Spain, or mass deportations.... Tourism works both ways.
Since this is an important subject, we need to have some idea what could happen, but so far, there hasn't been much said. This, maybe, because we simply don't matter in political terms, having no voice, no representation and no champions.
The Spanish, bolstered by (improbable) figures from their statistics agency the INE, think there are 270,000 Brits living in Spain - not so dissimilar from the supposed number of Spaniards in the UK (even if the Spanish are working/studying while us lot generally speaking are here in a less demanding capacity). If the UK, post Brexit, were to lay any controls on the Spaniards there, then we would expect similar controls here - maybe work-permits and visas and convertible bank accounts. Maybe problems with health coverage. So, while the vote may come from the UK, the reaction towards the Brits in Spain will come from Madrid. This, again, could vary according to which coalition or party eventually takes power here.
I got a letter from an ex-Bédar resident, now back in Scotland, who says: 'I gather from your blog that you're worried about the UK leaving the EC and Brits living abroad having no say in the matter. I also gather you'd rather stay in Spain, even if there are no non-Spanish councillors in Mojácar. Well, just to cheer you up, read the following article: 'FactCheck Q&A: will Brexit lead to independence for Scotland?'.
So, if the UK were to vote as a whole to leave the EC, the Scots might decide that they weren't part of the deal. It might well push them over the edge so as to leave the UK - in which case there wouldn't be a UK any more.
If the UK were to split into its constituent nations, then it might well be that people who now hold a British passport, like you and I, could then decide which country they can choose to become subject to - this is exactly what happened to inhabitants of Czechoslovakia, who were allowed to choose.
So think seriously about becoming Scots if you're not already. Meanwhile, I've bought a kilt and some bagpipes...
'. Silly, but this could work for me. I'll just add another 'n' to my name.
Lennox.
