Akwa Ibom Politics: Uyo Lawmaker In Trouble

*Second term ambition suffers set-back

*As Uyo stakeholders back Anietie Eka for AKHA

The second term ambition of Lawmaker representing Uyo State Constituency in the Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly, Hon Monday Eyo is currently in jeopardy.

This is as a result of a decision by political egg-heads in Uyo to throw their weight behind Hon Anietie Eka who is aspiring for the same Assembly seat in 2019.

According to a top party (PDP) source, the decision to dump Eyo, popularly referred to as ‘Murray’ for Eka by key PDP stalwarts in the area has thrown the Local Government into disorder with Eyo reportedly not ready to go down without a fight.

NEWS LINK learnt that a strategic political facade has been plotted for Eka by the stalwarts all in a bid to diminish the influence of Eyo who is said to have fallen out with some major stakeholders in the area over undisclosed reasons.

Last weekend, the subtle move to re-introduce Eka (he was a councilor during the tenure of Obong Victor Attah) into the political arena commenced with a horde of Uyo youths storming his home to demand he steps out to represent them in the House of Assembly in 2019.

They also reminded him (Eka) that it is the turn of Etoi to produce a representative in the AKHA, claiming that zoning has always been sacrosanct as far as Uyo politics is concerned.

However, according to feelers from Uyo, the incumbent lawmaker representing the State Constituency is not giving up hope of earning a return to the AKHA in 2019.

NEWS LINK was informed on good authority that Murray as he is fondly called has armed himself with a very heavy war-chest which he intends to use to curry favour from the youths since he is aware that the stakeholders have turned their backs on him.

According to sources, Murray’s stockpiling has been massive and will require a combined effort of influential politicians to truncate his ambition. NEWS LINK was informed that his reluctance in embarking on the customary constituency briefing is not unconnected with his reluctance to dismantle his huge war-chest.

Apart from money, Murray, NEWS LINK learnt is enticing Uyo people with a promise that a return to the Assembly in 2019 will enhance the chances of an Uyo person emerging Speaker of the AKHA.

A statement from Murray’s media aide, Imoh Ben buttresses the fact that the lawmaker is using the Speakership position to bargain his way to the hearts of Uyo people.

“There is no way the two terms will run through the circle of zoning rotation that Uyo State Constituency will not produce the Speaker.Hon.Uko’s emergence(a first timer) as Speaker was by accident which may not happen again in fifty years.

“Uyo cannot leave her fate in the hands of accidental chances. We must deliberately scheme to the top.

Second Term is our tickets to the prime seat. What numerous benefits the seat shall attract to Uyo, that one term lawmakers cannot deliver to Uyo.

“One term which is now out dated in the emerging politics, was conceived then when it was necessary. Now Two Terms far sighted vision cannot be avoided because it is a necessity Uyo people must be courageous enough to embrace.

Uyo cannot act as cowards and run away from what we will definitely confront now or later.

Constitutions, bye-laws and conventions are subjected to changes, as Nigeria is presently doing.

Uyo was not sentenced to one term life imprisonment. Are we ?Even then people appeal against sentences or escape to freedom”, Imoh Ben said.
