N25,000 Acceptance Fee: Crisis Looms At University of Uyo

Crisis is said to be in the off in following plans by the management of the University of Uyo, Uniuyo to impose N25,000 Acceptance Fee for students admitted for 2017/2018 academic session.

The acceptance fee which came through a circular issued by the school’s management has already generated tension in the school community and among parents and affected students.

The release read in parts,
This is to inform all the candidates offered provisional admission into the University of Uyo (UNIUYO) Degree Programmes for 2017/2018 academic session, that the management has released the amount to be paid as acceptance fee and the payment procedure.
“Successfully admitted candidates are to pay a non-refundable acceptance fee of 25,000 only.”

It was gathered that aside the acceptance fee, there are other sundry charges made before the prospective students could be fully admitted. This, it was learnt will force the students to cough out about N30,000 to be admitted into the school.

The development, it was learnt has caused ripples between management and parents. The parents are said to be questioning the rationale behind the exorbitant acceptance fee in a Federal Institution in the country.

One of the parents who have his name as Anietie Ibanga described the N25,000 acceptance fee in a Federal Institution in a country that Muhammadu Buhari is the President, as fraud.
He said, “when parents are battling with the harsh economic situation in the country, the imposition of 25,000 acceptance fee by a Federal University in which Muhammadu Buhari is the President is nothing but fraud.

The visibly angry parent said that the management of the institution has not interest of the poor students at heart. He advised the school management to rescind the decision in the interest of the less privileged students who cannot afford the high cost of fees in private schools but have to depend on public schools to actualize their dream of becoming graduates.

Another parent who did not want his name in the print said that the management, parents and the affected students may be on a collision cause if the situation is not well managed. He advised the management of the institution to have a second thought about the fee considering the present economic situation in the country.

When contacted, the Director of Information at the University, Mr. Godfrey Essien, confirmed the N25,000 acceptance fee.
