Akwa Ibom INEC officer’s wife abductors reduce ransom to N1 Million
Kidnappers of a senior nursing officer in Ukanafun Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, Mrs. Effiong Ekereke, have reduced the ransom demanded for her release from N10 million to N1 million
Abductors of the wife of Mr. Effiong Ekereke, a senior officer at the Independent National Electoral Commission in Akwa Ibom State, have reduced the ransom they demanded to N1m.
It was learnt that Mrs. Ekereke, a senior nursing officer, was kidnapped on New Year’s Day from her home in Ikot Akpankuk, in the Ukanafun Local Government Area.
The kidnappers were said to have demanded a ransom of N10m.
A family member, who pleaded not to be named, told our correspondent on Wednesday that the kidnappers had reduced the ransom to N1m.
The source said, “The kidnappers were forced to reduce the ransom after they realised that the family could not raise the N10m ransom they demanded earlier.”
An indigene of the area, Etim Umoh, said the hoodlums kidnapped the lady in place of her husband, who ignored a threat letter the hoodlums sent to him, demanding N1m or risk being killed.
He said, “It is the usual practice here for gangs to send letters to targets, mostly civil servants, businessmen and politicians, demanding a certain amount of money and threatening to kill or kidnap them if they fail to provide the money.”
According to him, the principal of a secondary school in the Ukanafun LGA was murdered last year for refusing to pay N1m to a group of gangsters.
The Commissioner of Police, Akwa Ibom State, Mr. Adeyemi Ogunjemilusi, who took over the command on Tuesday, said the police would restore peace to the state.
“To make Akwa Ibom State the safest in Nigeria is our desire. I assure you that the morale of the personnel would be raised through attractive welfare packages.
“Let me therefore warn that tough time awaits criminal elements in the state. The command will make it very difficult for them to succeed,” he said.
